==================================== ==================================== Mission: All the King’s Horses Day 2 Stardate: 2413.10.16 ==================================== ==================================== (USS Boudicca - Observation Lounge - aCEO Ensign Anton Gesar - 0817) Anton had decided that it was best to find out what was going on later than get into trouble for having a separate conversation during a meeting. As he sat down he heard Candle mention something about Topaline and it's mining. Anton entered search parameters into his PADD as he continued to listen. An Ensign Anton had not seen before asked, "Do we know how many souls were at that colony and the possible percent of dead or wounded?" ~So, we are going to a colony that mines Topaline where something has happened that people are injured.~ When everyone was finished the aCO began answering the questions as Anton took note of anything that was related to him and Engineering. "Mister Gesar, unless the medical staff informs me that Commander Lorimar will be returning to full duty immediately," he cast a glance in Doctor Caskie's direction, but returned his focus immediately to Gesar, "you will be our point person from your department. If the disaster looms quite as large as it appears from the message, you are going to be quite busy indeed. If this *was* a planetary quake, there may be miners trapped underground -- I understand that topaline is deep shaft mined -- in which case they may need some engineering miracles. Then there are all the other obvious potential problems... structural damage and whatnot. I don't think I need tell you what a big job your people will be tasked with, do I?" "No sir you don't. I will start preparations as soon as the meeting is over, Engineering will be ready." Durand went on answering other questions. Anton finished up writing a message to Rel offering Engineering assistance with the sensors if it is necessary when the commander dismissed the meeting, "...Doctor Caskie, Mister Gesar, would you remain a moment, please?" Anton heard right as he prepared to leave. The Commander whom Anton also did not recognize turned to Candle, "Dr Candle, please return to Sickbay and start implementing the Search and Rescue, Evac and Disaster programs and let everyone in Medical know that I will be calling a full department meeting in 30 minutes. Oh, and will you please find out whether Topaline will affect the transporters or not. Liaise with anyone you need to, especially Lt Roberts in Ops. I'll be down shortly. Thank you." "Dr. Candle, if you find any issues involving Topaline and transporters please let me know if they are severe enough Engineering will need to get involved," Anton chimed in before Candle had left the Observation Lounge. (Reply Candle) Anton was getting more an more nervous as everyone exited the room until it was only him, the aCO and the new CMO whom Anton looked up on his PADD. He looked toward Durand and waited. ~At least they can't throw me off the ship until Lorimar is better.~ Anton had a half-amusing thought. (Reply Durand, Caskie) (Posted by Oleg Kislyuk) ****** (USS Boudicca - Observation Lounge - CMO Cmdr Josh Caskie - Day 2 - 0818) Josh had immediately smiled at Lt Roberts determined to catch him after the meeting and start getting everything organised with his help. She listened to the general discussion, questions and comments going on around her and made notes on her padd. She was about to ask whether the Topaline would affect their ability to beam down away teams or beam up casualties and whether they would need transport enhancers or possibly have to use shuttles when the Captain began to wind up the meeting so she merely made another note on her padd so that she could find out later. The Captain finished his summing up with a request. "Alright then. We'll be going to yellow alert shortly; I don't want to be caught unaware. Let's plan for the worst and hope for the best people. If there is nothing further, you are all dismissed. Doctor Caskie, Mister Gesar, would you remain a moment, please?" Josh simply nodded and turned towards her ACMO. Soon it was time to leave as he did so Basil went over to Lt Ayslin Rel , “Sorry to bother you, Sir, but I think if we both looked at the properties of Topaline then maybe we can get an idea sorted as to whether it will affect transporters as well as sensors.” (Reply Rel, Any) (Posted by Warren Simkins) ****** (USS Boudicca - Observation Lounge - aCO Commander Durand - 0821) Alan had waited for the few remaining questions to be put forth and answered, then for the balance of the ship’s senior officers to filter out of the room, leaving just Caskie, Gesar, and himself. “Thank you both for remaining behind. We have a pressing issue that needs to be addressed, and both of you are the ones most directly involved.” ~No point dancing around it... we need to move along here. There is far too much to do and far too little time to get it done.~ “Doctor, *will* the Chief Engineer be able to return to duty anytime soon?” (Reply Caskie) “I see. He *will* recover though, correct? When do you estimate that he will be well enough for visitors? I’d like to check on him.” He waited intently. "No Sir he will not. Dryditch is a problematic infection to treat since we rarely see it and rarely have to deal with it now. “I see. He *will* recover though, correct? When do you estimate that he will be well enough for visitors? I’d like to check on him.” Josh smiled. "Oh yes, he will recover. Problematic as Dryditch is it is never fatal now and I am simply keeping the CEO under sedation because I am a great believer in sleep as a means of recovery. You may visit him any time you wish. It will not cause him any hassle to wake him up. However there are certain biohazard protocols that will need to be observed if you want to visit him at present, since Dryditch can be highly infectious and I would rather not spread it around." "Since the CEO is highly infectious and has been moved to one of our biohazard suites you will need to wear a suit to speak to him. It wasn't that he couldn't remember current things well enough, it was just a precautionary measure on his part. It seemed to him as if the ship and its crew would be tested to their limits with this mission. They would see some horrific sights and would be working long hours with little rest, and it was quite likely that there would be casualties among the crewmembers...that was the sort of mission it was...dangerous. Jerome knew deep down in his bones that after it was all over, his department would be busy dealing with some troubled crew members. Listening in silence, he heard the aCO speaking of the CEO being in Sickbay and vowed he would go and check up on the man himself to see how sick he was. Lorimar was, after all the acting FO now that Dorga was on LOA and he couldn't be much help to their new acting CO if he was laid up for days on end. Once he had ascertained Lorimar's condition he would then decide on his next course of action or inaction, whatever was the outcome. Some time later when the meeting was dismissed, he made his way to Sickbay to see the Chief Engineer. (reply none necessary) (posted by Sal) ****** (USS Boudicca - Ready Room - aCO Commander Durand - 0825) Alan listened intently and with growing dismay at the news regarding the Boudicca’s Chief Engineer. He let none of his inner feelings show however, keeping his expression impassive. “Very well Doctor, I will do that at my earliest opportunity. You can expect a visit from me as soon as we get things squared away here. If you have nothing else, please return to your planning... I know you have a great many details to work out, thank you.” (Reply Caskie iyw) As soon as the Doctor had left, Durand turned his full attention to Ensign Gesar. “Now, Ensign... as you heard the CEO will not be fit for duty anytime soon. That means that you, as his senior assistant, will need to assume temporary command of the department. Are you up to that much responsibility?” (Reply Gesar) Durand studied the younger man intently. He had reviewed the personnel files of all the ship’s senior officers, and committed the details to memory. He had noted that Gesar was the son of a ranking officer; Alan wondered if the younger Gesar thought that afforded him some sort of luxury or freedom of action. Time to find out. “I do have a question for you Mister Gesar. Do you think that repairing a replicator is sufficient cause for being late to a meeting? You knew that the CEO was in sickbay; therefore the task of representing engineering fell to you. I’m not so upset that you were late for the meeting. However, the cause was completely unjustified. If you had been detained by an actual emergency, that would be perfectly understandable. But a *broken replicator*? If you are going to run the department in Commander Lorimar’s absence, you have to learn to prioritize, and more importantly to delegate authority. As the department head, you can’t possibly fix every problem on your own. You will need to have faith in your subordinate officers and senior enlisted. After all, some of them have significantly more experience than you do. Your function is as much manager as engineer, do you understand that concept?” (Reply Gesar, Room for more) (Posted by Russ) ****** (USS Boudicca - Ready Room - aCEO Ensign Gesar - 0826) Anton realized as he listened to the doctor that he was hoping Lorimar would be ready for duty. Not long ago if you asked him whether he was ready for command he would have jumped up and said 'Yes!'. However, recent events have taught him just how much more he has had to learn. Several blunders as well as the passing of his father have brought a level of humility that he has never experienced before. And now, faced with having to really take over in Lorimar's absence, he wished he had more time to prepare. Once the doctor left, Anton prepared himself for what was about to come. “Now, Ensign... as you heard the CEO will not be fit for duty anytime soon. He smiled inwardly, thinking that the young engineer definitely had promise. He nodded as Gesar finished his statement. “I accept your assurance that it won’t happen again. One other thing Mister Gesar -- a bit of personal advice, if you will -- simply this. If you find yourself getting in over your head, either professionally, or personally, don’t be too proud to ask for help. I like confidence and self reliance in my officers, make no mistake about it. We can use that, either has a point of entry, or a way to send supplies to any survivors in that area." She paused again. By over laying this map with the data gathered by those scans and any intel we gain from planet side. We would have a much better ideal of how to deploy our forces... We have been diverted by Starfleet from our original patrol mission to a much more urgent one. Starbase 47 received a distress call from the mining/terraforming colony on Jahdara III. The call itself was very terse, and vague of detail. Perhaps that was a function of it being sent via subspace emergency transmitter, or perhaps something else. Repeated attempts to make contact with the colony have failed, and we have been sent to investigate. The few details of the message seemed to indicate some sort of disaster on a planetary scale. The Deputy Administrator of the colony sent the message, but it was rather short on detail. We are tasked with discovering the nature of the disaster, be it natural or otherwise, as well as rendering all possible aid and assistance. Our initial findings will determine just what type and quantity of resources Starfleet will send in relief of the colony.” He paused and sipped his coffee then pressed on. “We are about to go to yellow alert as a precaution. It’s almost two hundred meters above the median elevation in the vicinity. If I were using an emergency transmitter I would try and get to higher ground as well. Just my opinion sir.” Durand nodded. “We get paid to use our heads Lieutenant. Good surmise… I’d try and get to higher ground as well.” ~Or get away from whatever happened down there~ “Science, let’s have a full sensor sweep of the planet, starting with the center of the colony outwards.” (Reply Rel and/or Martin, Any) “Tactical, continue scanning the system for any other vessels.” (Reply Trei and/or Signos, Any) He paused, considering the options. His orders were quite clear, so that did limit his freedom of action slightly. However, the route to go from point A to point B was, as always, very much up to the Captain. As he pondered his options briefly, the Boudicca entered standard orbit, her scanners and sensors reaching out, probing and reporting back to the ship’s computer and her crew. He rose from his chair and walked forward to the OPS station, resting his hand lightly on Roberts’ shoulder. “Preliminary scans?” Doug twisted in his seat, looking up at Durand. “Sir, whatever happened… it was nothing short of catastrophic. I’m reading virtually no energy – primary, secondary, nothing – with the exception of some scattered emergency or portable sources. Scattered life signs, nothing on the order of expected density or placement. Difficult to resolve from orbit Commander, but we are also getting some odd readings from the vicinity of the Primary Atmosphere Processor. Possibly some radiation in the area of the main fusion plant as well. We are getting all sorts of refractions and sensor distortions, I suspect from the Topaline present. Lieutenant Rel was quite correct; sensor performance is degraded at least sixty three percent. Attempting to compensate.” Durand turned to face aft and spoke clearly, his initial course of action decided. “Science, Engineering, see what you can do about sensor performance would you?” (Reply Science, Engineering, Any) “Lieutenant Trei, take a security team to the surface, secure a landing site and perimeter. David tapped his control panels and made a diagram of the Jahdarain system appear on one of his console screens. "Ok, Commander. This may get a little complicated if I start to lose you let me know, because I sure as heck don't understand all of it myself. As I'm sure you remember my theory was a gravitational force pulled on the planet causing the quakes." (Durand iyw) "So the first thing I started scanning for is the placement of Jahdara III in comparison to the measurements of the of the survey teams when the planet was colonized. Well it has moved. Its orbit and rotation has slowed by 17.688 minutes each. That's not a lot in astronomical terms; however I then scanned the star and the rest of the planets also. They also are out of place by an average of about 37 minutes either slower or faster than they should be. (Durand) "There are two major problems with this correlating with my theory. First I should be able to line the planets up so that their position would all correlate with that of the survey team, and I can't. Second I can't find any indications that anything with the mass needed to move this star system, ever came through this sector let alone near this system." (Durand) "At first I thought, 'Ok, this must be a case of interstellar drift'. When we look at a star map we see fixed points, and we usually look at it as two dimensional. The problem with that is first the universe is three dimensional and as you know nothing in the universe is fixed it is always moving. We compensate for the three dimensional aspect with the coordinate system we use. The three numbers that are separated by 'marks'. Earth's is 0mark0mark0. The second is that with everything moving these points don't line up anymore after just a few years. Earth is no longer at the coordinates that we have assigned it. No planet is." David could tell that the Commander was getting bored of his report. "My apologies, sir. I know I am rambling a bit; however I need you to understand that this planet was surveyed less that a hundred years ago. The star could not have drifted the almost 15 light minutes that it has, and the planets would not have been able to speed up or slow down as much as they have. The planets should not have sped up on their own in the first place. It defies the laws of physics." (Durand) "At this point I can not say what caused the movement of this system. That being said I did find one thing though at this point I don't know if it is relevant. There seems to be a cavern that extends under the south east portion of the colony. Go on, please.” (Reply Martin iyw) His curiosity only grew as the science officer went on to detail the changes in orbital mechanics in the Jahdara system. “Which could suggest a transfer of either mass and/or energy… interesting.” (Reply Martin iyw) Martin then went on to further elucidate. "There are two major problems with this correlating with my theory. First I should be able to line the planets up so that their position would all correlate with that of the survey team, and I can't. Second I can't find any indications that anything with the mass needed to move this star system, ever came through this sector let alone near this system." Durand had been studying the displays as he listened, and he was able to follow the theory thus far. “So whatever caused this didn’t affect all objects in the system equally? Interesting…” Martin began a discourse on interstellar drift, which he had originally considered as a cause. The discussion then turned into an almost pedantic review of basic navigation, and the coordinate system. It did, however relate directly to the business at hand so he followed along. Evidently the Ensign began to realize that he was rambling a bit, and said as much, apologizing to Durand. Durand smiled again. “That’s fine Mister Martin. My post grad thesis was on interstellar navigation; I get the coordinate system and its niceties, but thank you much for the review.” (Reply Martin iyw) The science officer then concluded his report, talking about what appeared to be a subterranean cavern of some sort. “…It's not listed on the scans of the planet when the planet was survey. Having just come from the Sickbay, he had discovered that Lt. Commander Lorimar was too sick to be able to resume his duties any time soon as acting First Officer for the acting CO, Commander Alan Durand. He hadn't received a summons to the Bridge but he felt that his place was at the aCO's side. He had been a first officer for several years on the USS Saratoga and was certain he could be of some use to Durand until Lorimar was able to return to duty. "Sir!" He said quietly, his piercing, dark brown eyes assessing the man who sat in the command chair and liking what he saw. "I would like to put my experience as counselor and previous acting CO of this ship, and several years as a first officer at your disposal. I am aware that your aFO is currently indisposed but I fully understand if you prefer not to accept my services and if that is the case I ask permission to just assume my duties as counselor on the Bridge." (reply Durand, any) (posted by Sal) ****** (USS Boudicca - Deck 21, Secondary Shuttlebay - AOPS Lt(jg) Roberts - 1045) Doug stopped and took a breath, surveying the scene in the oddly empty looking space around him. The operations and engineering staffs had performed at a record pace in prepping, clearing, and launching the normal shuttle complement stored here, relocating them to the now very crowded main shuttlebay. Engineering had rigged a second industrial replicator to supplement the one always present here, and they were in the process of replicating critical care biobeds and sundry equipment in order to supplement the ones available in the regular sickbay. They had room for many more... but how many could be efficiently staffed? That was a question for sickbay and the medical staff to answer. But first, one other thing had to be tested. “Computer, activate Emergency Medical Hologram.” [EMH online.] The amazing creation of of photons and forcefields shimmered into existence in front of him. “Please state the nature of the medical emergency.” ~Is he scowling at me???~ “Doctor, we are testing functionality in this area.” The EMH peered intently at Doug, examining him as one might a science experiment. “Lieutenant *junior grade*...” “Roberts. Doug Roberts. Doctor, we are--” “Mister Roberts, do you think I am some sort of photonic toy for your amusement?” “Certainly not, Doctor. As I was trying to explain--” “According to Starfleet medical protocol, I am only to be activated for emergency purposes. If there is not--” “DOCTOR!” Doug raised his voice, losing patience rapidly. The EMH paused, considering. Roberts didn’t give him time to finish, however. “Doctor, there *is* a medical emergency. The planet we are now orbiting has suffered a major disaster, and there may be several thousand casualties. We were testing your functionality because I think you will be needed.” “Why didn’t you say so Lieutenant? I *am* fully functional, and programmed with--” “Computer, deactivate EMH!” A puzzled looking emergency medical hologram disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. Roberts shook his head to clear it, then tapped his commbadge. “Lieutenant Roberts to Sickbay.” (Reply Sickbay) “We are well underway with the critical care modifications in the Secondary shuttlebay. I’ve just tested the functionality of the EMH... it is operational here. We are replicating biobeds and critical care equipment under emergency operation protocols. Durand rose and shook ManyHorses’ hand firmly, welcoming him to the Bridge and stated he was welcome any time and that his experience and insight was appreciated. “....You are aware of our current situation, or do you need to be briefed in? Taking the captain's welcome as also meaning he could now engage his rump to the chair on Durand's left, Jerome sat down. He noted that Durand hadn't actually said that Jerome could be his acting FO. Perhaps the commander didn't need one after all. "Sir, I am appraised of all relevant information that you gave us during the meeting earlier today. If there is anything further I should be aware of I would welcome updating on the matter." (reply Durand) As he listened to the acting CO, ManyHorses gaze roamed around the Bridge and those manning the stations, and he well remembered his stint as acting CO and his gratitude to Manito for the efficiency of the crewmembers. It was hard enough being put in charge of complete strangers, so it greatly reduced the stress when one knew that the ship was crewed by one of the finest teams in Starfleet. His mind flitted to Susan Rivers briefly before he quelled the questions that had arisen...where was she? Why hadn't she contacted him? Was he mistaken in thinking they'd begun something special? "In theory it is possible. The trouble is that it can not be done quickly. We would have to rededicate a portion of the ships memory to store a complete copy of the EMH and reprogramming the ship's holo-emitters to generate two holograms would take more time than we have. Not to mention running tests to make sure that the holo-emitters would not need any additional power rerouted to them. I'm sorry Lieutenant, but by the time we would be finished the second EMH would not be of any use to you." (Reply Roberts) Anton turned back to Trei, "Sorry about that. As I was saying, I have a team setting up emitter relays in these coordinates provided by Ensign Martin who will need some sort of security escort. Durand hadn't really clarified his decision about the offer and Jerome figured it best to wait and see what happened, pretty sure that Durand was the type of fellow to make no bones about what he wanted, and sure enough he soon put ManyHorses straight. He gave Durand an apologetic smile and shrugged slightly. "Thank you for your confidence in me." Without further words, Jerome stood and seated at Durand's right while the CO asked him about Lorimar and whether he was able to speak with him or if he was still unconscious. Take four of my team over to be safe and help with the rescue. Get to it." Simon merely nodded and gathered his teams around him. Turning around he gestured for the security teams to join them for the briefing. When they had all gathered around he began to address them. "Ok boys and girls. We are all headed of to the mines on a S&R mission. This brings it's own problems. I have no idea what we will find there until we get there, but I am fairly sure that it will mean that we will have to explore the mine shafts to search for survivors." Simon turned to the security team. "Gentlemen, please do not think that I do not value you or your input, but have any of you every had any climbing experience?" (Reply anyone who might want to be on this team if you want) He waited to hear their answers and then eventually began giving orders. "Fine, those of you with climbing experience will come with us. Those of you who do not will wait at the top of the shaft. This is non negotiable. Those of you with no experience, no matter how willing are more than likely to get someone killed than help us, or die yourself. I know this sounds harsh but it is true." Simon turned to the most senior security officer. "My people will now set up an anchor point so that we can belay ourselves down the shaft. I think one security officer to our two man team should work. I have to remind all of you not to put your weight on anything in that shaft without firmly securing yourself to your belaying rope first. Honestly, try not to put any weight on anything in the shaft since I have no idea how stable it could be. If any of my team tell you to stop then I need you to stop immediately, and no arguments. If you are told to stop then stop and don't move again until one of my team gives you the go ahead. My team are the experts here and they know what they are doing. One step out of line by anybody else could kill us all. Make sure all of your team know this and understand." He had no way of knowing precisely how long he had been enduring the living torment, as his personal chronometer had been smashed during the accident. All power was out in the shaft, and the main gallery as well. It was a guess, no more… and possibly a bad one, considering the pain filled haze in which his thoughts resided. His broken and battered body lay trapped by the shattered and twisted remains of the shaft elevator, which he and the other miners had been riding down the shaft when the incident had occurred. In the ensuing hours he had drifted in and out of consciousness more times than he could count, and he had spent equal amounts of that time struggling to free himself, and then when he had accepted the futility of that effort, speculating wildly on what might have actually happened. He was a trained, experienced, and intelligent professional, but never in his experience had he encountered or even imagined anything like the fury that he had thus far endured. Things had seemed to begin normally enough, with he and his fellow miners descending in the personnel car for their overnight shift. They were, he recalled, passing the four kilometer level, perhaps two hundred or so meters above the gallery floor, when the world went crazy. The elevator car shuddered violently; he swore it actually rose several meters, but that was crazy, he knew. It tossed the men and their gear around like children’s toys, smashing them multiple times against the walls, ceiling, and floor of the elevator car. He remained conscious throughout. The power failed almost immediately, but even then he thought he was safe. Only for a moment. Somehow, the time tested and well proven design of the maglock safety braking system failed… partially. Instead of the car holding position, it had slid slowly at first, then rapidly gained speed, careening down the shaftway with nothing to stop it. Except for the pile of debris at the bottom. The force of impact crushed and split open the car like a ripe melon, bouncing it off the rail system and killing or injuring the miners within. When Mike regained consciousness, he found himself suspended out the open door of the car, dangling in the blackness, his legs caught in the wrecked framework of the car floor. The blood rushed to his head, dizzying him, but he did his best to focus. He could hear moaning from inside the remains of the car, but when he tried to lever himself up to check he found he had very serious injuries to his back and legs. Whether from shock or trauma he didn’t know, but he couldn’t free himself. The best he could do was reach his emergency handlamp and play it around the devastation. He couldn’t possibly imagine the scale and scope of disaster which would cause this, and knock out the main and emergency power systems for the mine. Time passed. His numbed fingers dropped the water bottle he had managed to fish from his vest. He was perspiring. Cold. Thirsty. He was in deep trouble, and knew it. ~Carol…~ (Reply none yet) (Posted by Russ) ****** (USS Boudicca – Sickbay - aCO Commander Durand – 1100) Alan threaded his way through the bustling and crowded sickbay – thankfully there were no patients from the colony as yet – but the staff were very busy indeed. She had med techs schlepping back and forwards from the beam down site to the hospital to carry every single bit of medical equipment as it was beamed down and stacking it up where it would be accessible to anyone who needed it. That was organised. She had other people going over the medical kits as they were being handed out to personnel making sure that they were fully stocked and ready, and that once the kits were returned empty to make sure that they were filled up again ready for use. She didn’t have the luxury of going to check on him… in fact, she scarcely had time to even think about him, so busy had the engineering teams been trying to deal with the situation planetside and shipboard. She stole moments now and again to do so though. Such as now. While she waited for the starboard lateral sensor array to complete the latest sweep of the colony, she devoted her thoughts to Bob. ~I so hope he’s going to be alright! I need… to go see him, talk to him… just to know that he’s alright!~ A series of beeps from the console in front of her brought her back to work. “What the…” she muttered to herself. Fingers dancing upon the console, she called up a more detailed analysis of the scan, then rapidly rechecked it to be sure. When she was certain, she tapped her commbadge. “Bridge, this is Ensign Enright. We’ve just finished a sensor sweep of the Primary Atmosphere Processor plant on the lateral array. We are getting indications of Trihydrazine leaking from the substructure into the plant’s cooling equipment. Their recent time traveling adventure not withstanding, Anton was beginning to feel somewhat jaded about constantly being stuck at a Starbase. Right before the entrance Trei held up his hand signaling for them to stop. In his excitement Anton did not think there might be danger in the plant other than the plant itself. After Trei completed his sweep he waived them in. "You may start working with the controls now, but be alert to the shadows." "Thank you. Alright team lets break out the gear." Anton stepped up to what looked like a control station and began trying to run a system diagnostic and get information on what was happening. It took several minutes for the computer to bring up the details. "James," he waived to one of the engineering crew, "come here." The engineer approached. "According to this schematic it looks like they tapped a major subsurface aquifer for cooling. Look, there is a breach there and we are leaking Trihydrazine into the cooling system. Somehow there is still operating mining and processing equipment. We can't shut off or isolate the cooling in that area as long as that equipment is operable. I can shut off most of it from here except for two here and here," Anton pointed to two locations on the screen displaying the plant schematics. "According to the readouts those areas are still clear of radiation or any other toxic components so we'll have to do it manually." Anton stepped away from the console and turned to the rest of the team to explain the situation. James Tarver and one other CPO would go to shut down one of the two pieces of equipment. Another team would try to see if they can close up the Trihydrazine breach. "Alright, you have your orders. If you come across someone who is injured signal the medical teams. If they are in no immediate danger of dying remember this, if we don't get this plant shut down it will likely blow up. If we don't stop the Trihydrazine from spreading into the whole cooling system it can become gaseous and even more dangerous. We all have a job to do so lets do it." Anton walked back to the control station and began shutting down processing equipment. When he was done he turned to Trei. "Well Lieutenant, looks like you and I are going to be responsible for shutting down that other piece of machinery. Unless you would rather stay here." Two had no sign of mining equipment either which naturally lead to the assumption that they were no longer being mined. Jerome was still hoping that the scans would show some life signs, some miners trapped in air pockets waiting to be rescued. He hoped that if they were some still alive, that they weren't trapped in total darkness as he couldn't imagine anything worse or more claustrophobic than being trapped in a confined space with the good air slowly being used up and not being able to see your hand in front of your face. How dreadful that would be! From what Ensign Martin was telling Kowalski, most of the mines were blocked from 4 to 5 or more Kilometers down. Ensign Martin seemed to have a good head for small details and determining what needed doing in order to make Kowalski's rescue missions a little easier, having sent some extra emmitter relays down and maps of the mine shafts. Eventually Martin just as ManyHorses had hoped, reported signs of life in what he called Mine 4. "Commander ManyHorses, I have found life signs in one of the mines." ManyHorses smiled. "Can you determine how many, Mister Martin, and how far down they are?" If you need anything else, contact us, please.” (Reply Candle iyw, Any) (Posted by Russ) ******* (Jahdara III – Temporary Medical Site – ACMO Ensign Candle – Dr Candle - Day 2 - 1117) =/\=Roberts to Doctor Candle. He replied back to Roberts, “There is something, any idea who is working on looking at the sanitation systems down here? Basically if we cannot get them fixed then we’re going to need more water than you’ve already supplied.” (Reply Roberts, Any) (Posted by Warren Simkins) ******* (USS Boudicca – Deck 20, Cargo Bay 1 – AOPS Lt(jg) Roberts – 1118) =^=There is something, any idea who is working on looking at the sanitation systems down here? Basically if we cannot get them fixed then we’re going to need more water than you’ve already supplied.=^= Doug scratched his forehead with two fingers. He hadn’t considered the sanitation problem, being neither doctor, nor engineer. He had been fully absorbed in the organizing of the replication and logistics operation, but now that he was made aware of it, he took the problem squarely upon his shoulders. “Alright Doctor, I confess I missed that issue. I’ll check with engineering… if they don’t have a rapid solution we’ll get moving with supplemental water supplies. The ration packages we are prepping for transport have water included but we will get more ready for you.” (Reply Candle, Any) (Posted by Russ) ******* (Jahdara III – Temporary Medical Site – ACMO Ensign Candle – Dr Candle - Day 2 - 1119) “Excellent,” he said as soon as he saw her, “I need you to organise the vaccinations of our people heading into potential radiation zones. Have a talk to someone in security, I have warned them to expect one” The Head Nurse nodded ~What in blazes is her name~ Basil thought "Understood Sir. I have the triage units set up at both doors. We are bringing in equipment as soon as it being beamed down and stacking it in a central location that is accessible to everyone and we are ready with restock and resupply as and when needed. To be honest Sir all we need now are some patients." “Be careful what you wish for. Unfortunately they will come…. anyway I shouldn’t hold you up. Keep me informed of your progress,” (Reply Santiago iyw) Basil could see the staff were doing their jobs fine. Basil knew that sometimes you just let people get on with their duties, no interfering from him. Trouble was he was getting impatient, there were still unknowns and he wanted to get them solved. He decided to bug Kawalski, “Dr Candle to Kawalski, what’s your progress?” (Reply Kawalski) (Posted by Warren Simkins) ******* (Jahdara III – Temporary Medical Site – ACMO Ensign Candle – Dr Candle - Day 2 - 1122) =^=Alright Doctor, I confess I missed that issue. Basil signed off and carried on with the final preparations. There were ready, just that gap between finding casualties and treating them. It left him thinking about why they are here and how. Not knowing is one thing but not doing anything about it is another. He'd thought he pester someone, "Dr Candle to Ensign Martin - been thinking is there anyway we can monitor the seismic activity on the ground here? I've travelled to Topaline mines before and have heard about mining techniques that can cause siesmic events or rock bursts, is there any way we can check on that?" (Reply Martin) (Posted by Warren Simkins) ******* (USS Boudicca – Bridge – SPC aFO/CCOUNS/CDR Jerome 'Hoss' ManyHorses – 1215) Preparations for incoming casualties aboard ship had been completed, all was in readiness for the estimated scores of patients that the Boudi could accommodate. QV had also been taken over and converted to process patients and reports were coming in from the planet's surface from the away teams. All-in-all they would be able to accommodate approximately 110 casualties. Jerome vaguely wondered what Arania was doing right now. Having observed her on his frequent visits to the lounge at varied times, he'd noted that she spent far more time working there than having any free time away from the place. ~ Indeed, she seems to be there all hours of the day and night. She appears to have many seeking her out to talk to her, yet no really close friends to spend her free time with, and I wonder if she ever sleeps? ~ He supposed that she must sleep some time, but he would have to talk to her about getting enough rest, after all she was unofficially (he thought), a part of his counseling team even if she didn't realize it. Because she was such an easy-going, caring, concerned individual, not to mention charming, that people just seemed to open up to her and tell her all about their problems and life stories. It just wouldn't do for her to fall ill due to being overstressed and overworked. ~ Where would I get my tidbits about what's happening in the undercurrent of the ship's crew and civilians? I suppose Cy would be a reasonably good substitute but doesn't nearly compare to Arania's vast knowledge. ~ Eyes flicking to the console in the arm of the chair, thoughts of Arania and Cy were swiftly put on the back burner of his mind as he saw that the first few casualties had just arrived in Sickbay. He hoped that the hospital ships they'd requested to assist would arrive in short order. Judging from where two were when the call had gone out from the Boudicca, he determined that one should arrive within the hour and the second two hours later. ~ Hopefully we will manage until then. ~ The chances were, that many of the miners and civilian population were already dead due to the magnitude of the quake that had devastated the colony.
